AN INTERVIEW WITH TUTU DU MONDE
Tutu Du Monde designer Andrea Rembeck reminds us that creativity and imagination are the epitome of childrenswear.
If there’s one thing that brings a smile to our faces, it’s a child enjoying the freedom of their imagination. Thus, naturally, we’re huge fans of Andrea Rembeck, the creator and designer of childrenswear label Tutu Du Monde. Rembeck’s signature Tutu dresses have had little girl’s twirling and dancing since 2009. How adorable are they! Being the masterful designer that she is, Rembeck draws aesthetics from the blushful graces of the French ballet to the vintage to the antique, while remaining relevant, unique and present in today’s bustling marketplace.
Just in the time for the holiday season — her collections of Tutus, headdresses, jewellery, capelets and ballet slippers are wonderful gifts — we sat down with the amazing designer to talk inspiration, the process of authentic craftsmanship and what’s next for our favorite little girl’s label.
WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND IN DESIGN?
I haven’t always designed childrenswear – I’ve studied fashion design at the prestigious French fashion college ESMOD. Upon graduation I started working for a local designer, but was soon asked to design for Escada. However, I decided to follow my dreams of emigrating from my home country of Germany to Australia and, after working for a number of leading Australian brands, I started my own label which was sold in Australasia and the US.
WHEN DID THE CONCEPT STRIKE YOU AND WHAT IS THE STORY BEHIND THE CREATION OF TUTU DU MONDE?
Upon the birth of my daughter in 2005, I took some time out to enjoy being a mother, not realizing that this very act would blossom into the birth of a brand too. I discovered that little girls love to lose themselves in make-believe worlds and, more than anything, cherished beautiful tutus. When my daughter asked me for one, I embarked on a quest to find one that was not mass-produced, hot pink and polyester. I couldn’t and Tutu du Monde was born in 2009.
IS THERE A THEMATIC MOOD BEHIND THE LATEST THE WONDER HOUR COLLECTION?
The latest collection “The Wonderhour” was meant to capture the magic, joy and expectancy of Christmas and the Holidays, taking us back to that childhood feeling of dream-like anticipation. Fairy queen, prima ballerina or princess, it will transport little girls to the realm of childhood magic and fantasy. Who doesn’t believe in Christmas magic?
WITH THESE BEAUTIFUL GARMENTS, WHAT IS THE DESIGN PROCESS LIKE?
It oftern starts with travel and scouring vintage stores and markets all over the world in the search for beautiful, timeless pieces with exquisite craftsmanship, which ultimately provide inspiration for my tutus. Once the collection has been designed and sketched up, I hop on a plane to India and spend a week or two in the workshop sitting with the beaders to transform my ideas and sketches into reality. It’s very exiting to get completely immersed in the creative process of materialising the new designs whilst soaking up the hustle and bustle, the sights and smells, colours and languages and tastes of India. The ever-smiling, wonderful people and the constant amazing discoveries at various markets and stores continue to draw me to this incredible country.
IS THE BESPOKE SERIES NEW? IT’S SUCH A UNIQUE IDEA! SO FUN FOR GIRLS.
Yes it’s not even officially launched yet; an extension of our signature collections, Tutu Du Monde Bespoke offers a premium service for our most discerning customers… they will have the freedom to choose their favourite dress silhouette, size and the colours and embellishments to bring it all to life.
DO YOU FIND YOUR WORK HELPS REMIND PEOPLE, AND CHILDREN, ABOUT THE ENERGY AND CONFIDENCE THAT COMES WITH DAZZLING UP?
I would like to hope so because Tutu Du Monde celebrates the imagination in all little girls, and all that feeling good about themselves encompasses. Encouraging little girls’ inner beauty, celebrating their outer beauty, cherishing their innocence, blossoming their confidence and freedom…
We’re hoping to create so much more than just a piece of clothing, something that stays with them for years to come.
YOUR WORK IS REMINISCENT OF A MAGICAL FAIRYTALE. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE FILMS THAT YOU ADMIRE FOR INSPIRATION?
Sleepy Hollow, Pirates of the Caribbean, Black Swan, Life of Pi, The Cronicles of Narnia, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Alice in Wonderland, Grand Budapest Hotel… To name a few.
Plus, my 10-year-old daughter is obsessed with Audrey Hepburn, so there is also a lot of watching old movies going on.
WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON AND WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO MOST FOR 2016?
We’ve just started designing S/S 17 (FEBRUARY 17TH), which seems slightly insane… We are set on shooting the campaign for that collection in California in May, which is one exciting thing happening in 2016, but we have also quite a few other “still top secret” projects in work – both high end and high street fun… So stay tuned!
