Sorry sunshine, no one brightens a room more than stylist K-A Jones.
If you crush on homewares and interior design (well, if you’re reading this, then you probably do) you’ve most likely seen the work of stylist K-A Jones — the well-known industry nickname of Kerrieann Jones. Based out of the Sydney, Jones’ talents exist in several contexts from props to interiors to food, lifestyle and advertising. Atop of that, her freelancing schedule includes creative direction, fashion styling and wedding styling. When Jones brings her vision to life, most notably through our favorite magazines, her keen eye for detail, colour and interesting combinations make every page of her editorial stories a delightful discovery. We had a few words with the acclaimed interiors maven, highlighted between some of her latest creations (stunning stuff!) featured in Real Living… [Barnaby Lane Chair in Blush Leather pictured in above image.]
DESIGN TWINS: WHEN DID YOU REALIZE YOU WANTED TO VENTURE INTO THE WORLD OF STYLING?
K-A JONES: I’ve always had a passion for interiors. As a child, I loved going to antique stores, charity stores and garage sales with my mum to find unique furniture and homewares. When I moved into my own home, I loved styling it and adding new art to the walls… That snowballed into a genuine passion / addiction! My career at the time was in the music industry, and I longed for a change into the world of interiors and styling. So I decided to take the plunge and try my luck by assisting Sarah Ellison, the Real Living Senior Stylist, on one of her shoots. From there I became her assistant. The same editorial team was starting a new magazine called Homes+ magazine, and I was fortunate enough to become the stylist for this publication. I now freelance across a few magazines, however, most of my editorial work is for Real Living. I’m very lucky how it turned out! I absolutely love my job and couldn’t be happier.
WHEN YOU WERE STARTING OUT, WHAT WERE SOME OF THE TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS YOU HAD TO OVERCOME TO GET WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?
To be honest, there hasn’t been anything particularly crazy. I guess the scary thing was leaving an established career to start fresh in a new industry. So learning the ropes and cutting through in a new career was a little daunting at times, but more so, really exciting!
YOU PRETTY MUCH STYLE ACROSS ALL GENRES! HOW DO YOU STAY ATOP OF WHAT BRANDS ARE DOING AND WHAT NEW/UP-AND-COMING BRANDS ARE ENTERING THE SCENE? DO YOU HAVE A SPECIAL MEDIA DIET?
Yes, like everyone, instagram! I follow many incredible creatives and brands. I also have great relationships with brands and stores who keep me in the loop of their next product range ahead of it being released.
WHAT ARE SOME TRENDS OR IDEAS YOU’RE REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO SHOWCASING THIS YEAR?
I can’t give too much away, as I’m currently working on some for a magazine shoot! But colour trends for Autumn, I’m seeing Sage / Olive / Army greens, terracotta and mustard yellow (but not all together, yuk!!)
FAVORITE THREE SONGS TO BLAST IN THE STUDIO?
My favourite songs are constantly changing, I’m very indecisive! However I do have favourite styles to listen to though, I love chill-out to keep me calm on hectic shoot days and old school 90’s hip-hop to get me in the zone.
WHAT ARE SOME CHILDREN’S INTERIOR CONCEPTS THAT YOU LOVE AT THE MOMENT?
I like kids rooms that aren’t typical kids rooms, so for a little boy’s room, it could have a vintage photo print of a Rock ’n Roll legend. Or, for a little girl’s room, something aspirational yet edgy — like a print from Blacklist! I like kid’s room to have fun with an edge.
DO YOU HAVE ANY RESOLUTIONS FOR 2016? WHAT’S YOUR LIFE MOTTO?
I can never stick to resolutions! But I am a strong believer if your passionate about something give it your best shot. Don’t let fear hold you back. If you love it, give it your all and work your butt off. Be kind to people along the way, then everything will fall into place.
